History

Xiang Hair first opened its doors in 1989 in a small suburban salon in Melbourne’s west. With only two staff members and one big vision, founder Tom Donato set about building a strong creative force in Australian hairdressing. For three decades, his journey in the industry has been nothing short of remarkable. As the ultimate mentor, Tom has nurtured countless hairdressers behind the scenes, shaping them into industry frontrunners, his leadership responsible numerous creative accolades achieved, recognised globally. Having walked the long road to success, Tom’s next adventure within the industry is to impart his knowledge as a salon business coach.

Now, as Xiang Hair transitions into the capable hands of new owners who share Tom’s vision, the salon’s legacy of excellence and innovation is set to continue. The new owners are poised to carry forward Tom’s ethos, maintaining the salon’s commitment to quality and creativity. With a profound respect for Tom’s legacy, the new owners are all set to uphold the values and goals that have defined Xiang Hair for over three decades.

Xiang Hair boasts two hair salons across Melbourne. We have over 15 staff members and many industry accolades.

All our hairdressers and stylists have undergone a rigorous staff-training program. Our team are highly trained and qualified to provide the very best in hairdressing and customer service experience. We only use premium styling products and treatments including L’Oreal Professionnel, Kerastase, Kevin Murphy, Evy Professional Keratin treatments and Hot Tools and Amazing Hair Extensions.

Jamie’s love affair with hairdressing started over twenty years ago and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. One of the most constant and vibrant presences in our salons since he started at age 15, he is a multi-talented marvel as a hairdresser, session stylist and educator. Consistently collaborating with stylists, photographers and other hairdressers on shows, film, exhibitions, charity events and editorial campaigns he is industry renowned as one of the brightest creative forces. For this Melbourne born and bred local, his hair philosophy is suitably influenced- minimalistic, sleek and classic and given an urban edge through structure and he is expertly skilled across cutting and styling. Not surprisingly his client column is more often than not in wait-list mode but he loves to meet new clients as much as he loves shaping the journeys of his most loyal ones.

This past AHFA Creative Colourist of the Year is a legend in the hair colour world for good reason. Whether she is creating truly magical colour creations for her most recent photographic collection, guiding others through a workshop or creating customised colour creations behind the chair, her fans are devotees for life. Inspired by collaborating with likeminded artists and visionaries, she has a truly unique eye for the art of hairdressing and is just as comfortable in the salon as behind the camera on an editorial shoot and working with a VIP backstage. Dedicated to transforming her client’s image to make them feel amazing for over 17 years here at Xiang, she is an artistic one of a kind in the industry.

Since day one back in 1989, Andrea has been the smiling face and infectious laugh that every client knows and loves. With almost 40 years in the hairdressing industry, her passion is for people. To listen to people, to speak with people, to learn from people’s experiences, and to care for people, and our 35 team members could not be luckier to have her! Ensuring that the Xiang Hair universe runs smoothly for every one of our clients, she is responsible for all the behind the scenes action that makes us the best salon in Melbourne. As if that wasn’t enough? She is also a beloved presence on the floor at Essendon looking after her long term and loyal fans for all their hair needs.

Thing you love most about living in Melbourne?

I have to pick three- I love that on every corner we can find an amazing cultural dining experience. I love that we have so many beautiful walkways to explore. And I love that it is the fashion capital of Australia with so many incredible independent designers and creatives.

Part owner/Principal Stylist/Head Colourist- Xiang Hair Greensboro.

A true perfectionist Gabby takes no greater pride than in achieving her client’s dream result, whether it be a trend driven style, a technique driven colour or a precision driven cut. We jokingly refer to her as our 21-year-old, but we could not be prouder that it is in Xiang Hair years! She loves connecting with her clients on a deeper level and guiding the transformation of, not just their hair, but their confidence.

Amanda Lunedei

Head Colourist/Principle Stylist- Xiang Hair Essendon

Amanda’s passion for spreading the colour gospel to the industry she loves is unparalleled. Having worked with Xiang Hair for 11 years she has worked her way up to the key role of Head Colourist which allows her to fill her days with putting her colour finesse into action. Whilst there is no colour she hasn’t mastered, she is particularly called on for her impeccable balayage and freehand work, creating some of the most natural blondes to walk out of the salon. Her skills are so in demand she now runs regular colouring masterclasses to help others build their experience. Brimming with passion and enthusiasm, her colour ability is perhaps second only to the way she is able to turn a stranger into a friend within one appointment.

What’s not to love?! We have the best restaurants, bars, parks and some beautiful beaches. Plus you get to experience all the seasons which is perfect for a fashion lover like me as I get to fill my wardrobe with the best boutique fashion.

Jonny is a true Xiang Hair family member, having completed his apprenticeship here and continuing for the past 14 years. What keeps him at Xiang? The people. Whether his beloved long-term clients or his colleagues, he is proud of the bonds he has formed and the hair journeys he has guided. An out of the box thinker, Jonny is known for his show stopping creative work and extensive styling skills. If you are wanting hair that will get attention- he is your guy. Whether training with junior or senior staff members, within Xiang or beyond, or teaching online, he ensures he is up to date with all of the latest trends and techniques.

The cultural diversity. I love how it influences everything from food and architecture to a broad array of community celebrations embracing our diversity.
